Peugeot 508

28/01/2019 - Car of The year

Peugeot 508 is one of the seven nominees for Car of the Year 2019 award, alongside Alpine A110, Citroën C5 Aircross, Ford Focus, Jaguar I-Pace, Kia Ceed and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Let’s know something else about the French car.

Is there a fair market share for a regular mid-size saloon? In a leaning-to-SUV scene, Peugeot tried to get a piece of that decaying segment with the first 508, and redoubles efforts now with the second generation. The question is if Peugeot will succeed in direct competition with the undoubted premium cars that rule the class. It deserves so, in any case. Sat on a new and lighter platform, the 508 is also more compact and agile, a bit to the detriment of room in the rear bench. The new design traits enhance the stylish body, with a descending roof line. And there is the hatchback formula in the rear, unusual in the segment, most of all when there is also a SW body. The cabin is nice-looking and resorts to the piano-key controls seen in its siblings. The 508 has powerful 1.6 petrol powertrains, including a future plug-in hybrid, but focuses on updated, efficient diesels which boast their cleanliness… as any modern diesel, by the way.
