The prototype caused a sensation! In 2021, Renault presented a draft of its future Renault 5 with a concept car that played the neo-retro design card, in homage to the Renault 5 of 1972. The production model, faithful to the concept, was presented at the beginning of 2024 and did not fail to make a name for itself. 100% electric, the city car with the diamond is thus banking on the brand's past to seduce future customers and offers various engines as well as multiple customization possibilities.
The Renault 5 E-Tech plays the seduction card with a neo-retro style directly inspired by the Renault 5 of 1972. The least we can say is that it does not go unnoticed, especially when it sports a bright color such as yellow or green. Because yes, the brand with the diamond has played the originality card right down to the choice of colors. In addition to these two shades, the catalogue offers other more sober colours; blue, grey, black or white. The citycar's stocky silhouette can be embellished by various stickers offered on the Techno and Iconic 5 high trims. Compact (3.92 m long, 1.77 m wide and 1.50 m high), the R5 benefits from harmonious lines that are a bit cubic and faithful to those of the prototype and especially to those of its ancestor. Square headlamps, vertical taillights, short overhangs, evocation of the hood air vent (here become a load indicator), number 5 affixed to the tailgate, rectangular rear window... There is no shortage of details. The muscular fenders with plastic hardware evoke the mythical Turbo version and offer relief to the whole. In terms of gimmicks that are more amusing than useful, let's note the possibility for the car to wink thanks to a cinematic LED headlamps.
Like the bodywork, the interior is multiplying references to the historic Renault 5 with petal seats, rectangular air vents and a padded part located in front of the front passenger and inspired by the original ridged dashboard. Of course, the rival of the Peugeot e-208 plays the modernity card with a 10-inch touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster whose size varies between 7 and 10 inches depending on the trim chosen. This refinement is inlaid in a plastic frame, another reference to the original model. Despite the digital age, Renault has kept the most essential physical controls, such as those for the air conditioning. The interior takes on different configurations thanks to a varied catalog and does not deprive itself of bright colors. The customization options are numerous with a gearbox control (e-pop shifter) whose shape evokes that of a lipstick with interchangeable cases. The catalog also offers storage boxes as well as an original wicker bread basket to be attached to the center console and large enough to accommodate a baguette. Despite this warm and original general atmosphere, the little R5 does not display a very developed sense of welcome in the rear seats. Tall people will find themselves cramped, an impression reinforced by the impossibility of slipping your feet under the front seats.
The Renault 5 E-Tech is based on the new AmpR Small platform, although some mechanical elements are shared with those of the Clio and Captur. In 2025, the catalog will offer two additional engines of 95 or 120 hp combined with a 40 kWh battery. The latter announces a range of 300 km according to the WLTP cycle. The range is topped by the current available 150 hp variant with a 52 kWh battery. In this configuration, the R5 promises up to 410 km of range. This will supplant the electric Fiat 500 and the electric Mini Cooper.
