Launched in 2018, the X2 is rare on our roads. Shunned in favor of its X1 and X3 brothers, it is not giving up and has offered itself a new generation. Presented in 2023, it has established a more assertive style, while offering ever more advanced technologies. We take a tour of the owner.
Goodbye to consensual lines. The second X2 asserts its style with body folds cut with a pruning hook. The ruched headlamps frame a wide grille with contours illuminated in the style of the 7 Series. Depending on the finish, the front bumper is adorned with more or less imposing scoops. The silhouette is similar to the X4 and X6 with a receding roof line and a massive rear adorned with sawtooth lights. Compared to its predecessor, the technical brother of the X1 gains 19 cm in length (4.55 m), 3 cm in width (1.85 m) and 6 cm in height (1.59 m). Placed on 18 to 21-inch alloy wheels, the Bavarian SUV goes head-to-head with the Audi Q3 Sportback.
Regulars of the X1 (and BMW productions in general) will not be disoriented. The two SUVs share the same dashboard, adorned with the double curved panel with, on the left, a 10.25-inch module, and on the right a 10.7-inch touchscreen. The interface of the latter is similar to that of a smartphone with elaborate graphics and fluid navigation. This is enough to mark the gradual end of physical orders, which have become rare on board. The build quality is flattering with quality materials. The roominess is decent for a coupe SUV, with sufficient legroom but headroom that penalizes the taller ones. The boot space is 90 dm3 more generous than the previous model and can swallow up 560 dm3 of luggage, or 525 dm3 in the 100% electric iX2 version.
On the combustion side, the bonnet contains a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine (156 hp) coupled with a small electric motor (19 hp) to offer 170 hp (sDrive20i). The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine of the M35i offers 300 hp and all-wheel drive. The diesel range offers a 2.0 four-cylinder with 150 hp or 163 hp, the latter being available in a four-wheel drive version. In any case, you will have to be satisfied with a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Unlike the X1, the X2 does not have a plug-in hybrid but not an electric one with its iX2 variant. Two versions are on the program: eDrive20 with its 204 hp electromotor housed on the front axle, and xDrive30 which adds a module on the rear axle, thus becoming a four-wheel drive with a power of 313 hp. In both cases, you have to count on a 64.8 kWh battery, offering 462 and 433 km of range respectively. The maximum charging power is announced at 130 kW.
