Skoda's flagship, the Superb has been in the brand's catalog since 2001 (with the exception of the model marketed from 1934 to 1949). From generation to generation, the large sedan has continued to gain in character, flirting with the limit of the premium segment. This fourth version is no exception to the law of evolution and offers a sharp style, accomplished technologies and varied engines.
Plunging bow, gaping grille, gathered headlights, ribbed hood, protruding body line, fastback rear... The Superb sedan does not usurp its name. Although it does not contrast with the previous version, this generation is charismatic thanks to a sharper line. Here, every detail has been thought out to offer low air resistance. The result, a Cd of only 0.24! A good omen for consumption. While each model is always more imposing compared to the previous one, the fourth Superb limits its growth to gain only 4 cm in length (4.90 m) and loses 1.5 cm in width (1.85 m). This brings it closer to an Audi A6 or a Mercedes E-Class. Still equipped with a hatchback, the sedan is accompanied by an elegant station wagon called Combi. Conversely, its Volkswagen Passat cousin is only offered as an estate.
The Superb has never hidden its ambitions and has always played with the limit of the premium segment. This is evidenced by the soberly designed and refined interior, inspired by the Vision 7S concept. The dashboard incorporates a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch touchscreen. At the base of the latter are three push buttons, each with a digital display. The outer modules are dedicated to adjusting the interior temperature while the central one can accommodate up to four shortcuts. The automatic transmission control (the only transmission available) is installed on the steering column, providing ample storage in the centre console. In terms of manufacturing quality and spaciousness, Skoda always takes care of its occupants with a plush finish and very generous room, especially in the legs. The trunk claims 645 dm3, and even 690 dm3 for the Combi estate. No doubt, the Superb is a family friend!.
Under the hood, the rival of the Peugeot 508 goes straight to the point, skipping engines that are too tight or too powerful niche versions. The mass-market catalogue therefore offers a 1.5 TSI micro-hybrid four-cylinder petrol engine with 150 hp and a 2.0 TSI 150 hp four-cylinder diesel. The estate also benefits from a 2.0 TDI 193 hp combined with all-wheel drive. In any case, you have to count on the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
The plug-in hybrid version of the Skoda Superb
Like its cousin the Kodiaq SUV, the Superb has a plug-in hybrid engine. Only available on the Combi estate, it combines the four-cylinder 1.5 TSI 150 with a 54 hp electromotor to offer 204 hp. The 26 kWh battery announces a range of 100 km in 100% electric mode.
