The Nominees 2014
With its ‘i’ division BMW shows big faith in the present of electric cars, and the i3 is a proof. For size, room and cargo area, i3 is a rear-wheel drive vehicle with urban ambitions, but dynamics are typically BMW, because of its handling and its 170 hp motor. Tall on its big, low-rolling resistance wheels and with a high driving position, the i3 has a rather low centre of gravity, thanks to its battery pack at floor level. It’s a relatively lightweight car too, with a carbon-fibre body structure and no-frame windows. If a reach of 200 km on mild driving might seem not enough after a full recharge, a 2-cyl BMW (motorcycle) engine and a tiny fuel tank serve as a practical range extender; an option that costs about ten percent of the base price.
